Philadelphia Criminal Justice Center

Devine Brothers, Inc. was contracted to provide and install (2) 1600 Ton Centrifugal Chillers and (6) 1666 GPM Split Case Pumps located in the Penthouse Floor in the Criminal Justice Building. The project is located amongst major Center City Philadelphia intersections and pedestrian pathways.

The logistics on the project were as challenging as the actual installation. The Penthouse area is located 17 floors above grade. The building is a working Courthouse with up to 7,000 people passing through the building daily. The building is also home to Judges, Police and Sheriffs and is operational on a 24hrs basis.

Devine Brothers performed this work with minimal disruption to daily activities and this building serves as the cooling center for Criminal Justice Building, City Hall and Municipal Services Building. The cooling needs of all of these facilities are met by the Chiller/Pumps located in the Criminal Justice Building. Devine Brothers performed the following activities to complete the work:

  • Remove (3) steam absorption chiller. Units were cut into pieces and brought down through the service elevator
  • Removal of (6) pumps and all associated legacy piping
  • Open a 40’ hole in the wall of the Penthouse to allow pieces of the chiller to enter the building
  • Utilize a 600 Ton hydraulic crane to deliver the chiller pieces. (62 pieces of total equipment for Chillers)
  • Chillers had to re-assembled in the Penthouse
  • Pumps & piping were installed, controls tested and commissioned
  • Project was complete 180 days after equipment was delivered
  • The work was completed with zero complaints from the employees in all three buildings, leading to a very satisfied customer
